You’re shopping for a dog bed, and since your dog will normally sleep about 13 hours each day, you want him to be as comfortable as possible. So, you’ve picked a quality orthopedic bed that has memory foam, a removable cover for washing, and a great color to match your decor. But did you know that the size that you choose is just as important as the type of bed? It is, and there are 2 guidelines you can use to ensure you purchase the right size bed for your dog.
The first and best method is to measure your dog from nose to rump and then add 8″-10″. Then choose the best bed that will fit those measurements. Keep in mind the shape of each dog bed when comparing them for size–an oval type that is 24″ wide may not have the same space as a rectangular type that is the same width.
The second method is to use your dog’s weight to determine the correct size dog bed. You can use the following:
Small Bed Up to 24″ wide–weight 2 to 25 lbs.
Medium Bed 25″ to 36″ wide–weight 26 to 70 lbs.
Large Bed 37″ to 48″ wide–weight 71 to 110 lbs.
X-Large Bed 54″ wide and above–weight 111 lbs. and above
As a general rule it is usually better to buy a dog bed that is too big than one that is too small. So, if in doubt, the larger bed will most likely be the most comfortable choice for your dog. If you use these guidelines, you can feel confident that you are buying the right size dog bed that will keep your beloved canine companion comfortable and healthy.
