House Training Puppies
If you have new puppies, house training puppies is a very important task. House training of puppies is all about teaching them not to use the house as a toilet. You need a lot of patient with this, just like when potty training a kid.
When house training your puppies, you should note that:
- Puppies that are less than 4 months old have little control over their bladders.
- Puppies under 9 weeks should never be crated.
- All puppies ‘need to go’ last thing at night and first thing in the morning, whenever they leave their crate, whenever they wake up from a nap, and after finishing a meal. This is because puppies are unable to eliminate everything from their bladder and bowels on the first try.
Important rules that you should follow when house training your puppies are:
- You should never punish a puppy if you do not catch it in the act as it will not know the reason for the punishment.
- You should always praise your puppy whenever it does something right. Praises can include dog snacks or playing with the puppy.
There are several methods of house training puppies.
Housebreaking a puppy
This should be the first thing with a new puppy. Housebreaking is all about teaching puppies that the floors and carpets are not theirs. This can take a short period if done properly. However, you still need some patience. There are several books on how to housebreak a puppy in the market.
Crate training a puppy
This is putting the dog in a crate. Crate training is the most effective way of house training dogs and puppies. The crate will represent the puppy’s ‘den’ and since dogs do not like soiling their sleeping quarters, you will be able to house train them easily. This should take one or two months, but it depends on the breed of the puppy and the attention you are paying to the crate training process. The cage should not be too large as this could lead to behavioral problems since the puppy will adopt bad hygienic habits. The puppy will ‘go’ on one corner and it will then run through it and track it throughout the cage. The puppy’s natural instinct not to soil its bed will be forgotten.
Using dog training pads
You can use pre-treated pads to encourage the puppies to ‘go’ on them. These pre-treated pads are scented with a chemical that attracts puppies to them. When the puppies are in their ‘pre-potty position’, pick them up and take them to the pre-treated pads. The puppy will get used to the pad quickly and you should then move the pads closer to the door and eventually in the yard. You should not keep the pads too long inside since the puppy will think it is supposed to ‘go’ inside the home.
Professional help
If you are too busy for house training puppies, you should hire a professional to train it. You should not let a puppy grow past its first year without getting house trained because the older it gets, the harder it will be to train.
