Think about older members of your family, and how they need special furniture. It may be sturdier chairs with armrests to help them get in and out. Maybe they need a special bed that helps them sit up or just sits higher to make it easier to get in and out of. The aging process has weakened some of their joints and bones and their furniture needed to change to accommodate the aging process. Now think about your older dog. Are you giving him the same considerations?

Old dogs go through many of the same ailments aging people go through. Their joints get sore. Senses such as hearing and vision start to go out. They have a tougher time controlling bodily functions and may need a little helping hand when their body isn’t able to do what it used to.

Watch him for a few days and see if he moves slowly getting into and out of the bed, maybe he used to be able to get up on your bed at the end of the day, but now just sits on the floor beside you, and looks up longingly.

Many dogs have aching joints and muscles just like people, and there are beds that have been specially made to create a more comfortable space for your dog to sleep. From extra padding to heating pads build in, these can make his slumber more enjoyable.

If you have a dog that used to be able to hop up on chairs and sofas to look out the window, you can let him do that again. There are a few options for this. First, you can let him get up on those same pieces of furniture, by putting pet stairs in front of them, to give him a hand making the climb, or you can look into special window ledge beds. These are much like an ottoman that is made with a dog bed top, giving your pooch a way to get back to laying in the sun, while still in the comfort of a bed.

The aforementioned stairs are also helpful in other areas of the house. If your pet used to get up on your bed at night, you can move the stairs into a position to give him a way up to the bed once again. These stairs can also be taken to the car, to help him get in and out of the vehicle for a little time with his head out the window.

You should also consider what is going to be in the new bedding and dog furniture for your pet. You may have noticed that dogs start to smell a little more as they age. While you may still keep him bathed and groomed, he doesn’t always smell as good as he did when he was younger. Some bedding options have covers that can be easily removed and washed to help lessen the smell, and also make clean ups easier when he has an inevitable accident.
